Freezing Sunglasses in a Block of Ice?
A friend asked what material Nouvelle Chicane frames were made from. I said they are made from an engineering composite PA12 made specifically for use in high performance eyewear. I then boasted that it has excellent mechanical properties.
“Yeah, but are they durable?", he asked dismissively..
I returned, "I bet you could freeze Nouvelle Chicane frames in a block of ice..." 🥶
The Ice Block 🧊 Durability Test 📉 was on!!
< 🛑 DANGER PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO REPLICATE THIS EXPERIMENT. ICE EXPANDS UPON FORMATION AND COULD BURST THE CONTAINER CAUSING SERIOUS INJURY. 🛑>
Test engineers submerged the L'Orbitalli frames in water 💧at the bottom of a stainless steel lobster 🦞 pot. Then chilled them in the freezer for 6 hours 📉.
The force of the ice expanding nearly buckled the pot. It was impressive. No obvious damage was evident, when the block of cold hard 🧊 ice was extracted from the pot.
Our test engineer set them out to thaw and took time lapse shot ⏱ of the process.
The composite frame material, polycarbonate lenses, stainless steel hinges proved the functional design is not only iconic in the fashion world, they are built to last a lifetime.
